Put A Dull Finish On Your “Shiny Stuff”
Life is full of shiny stuff. Whether it’s your business life or personal life there are a lot of distractions to tempt you away from the path that you have laid out. By addressing two important questions companies can bring clarity to their sweet spot as an organization.
The first question asks, “What is your purpose, cause or passion?” One way to think of this is to ask “What’s the thing that gets you out of bed every morning?” It’s bigger than money, the product you make, the service you provide or a goal. Create a statement that is big and bold and does not point to any particular industry. Why does your company exist?
The second question is “What is your niche?” What’s that section of the market you serve best and what is it that you do best for them? Knowing your niche can help you stay on top of the competition as well as stay ahead of industry changes. Adding an element of the thing that you do better than your competition helps answer this question at an even deeper level.
The intersection of your passion and niche hits on what a company is genetically encoded to do, defining your Core Focus.
Once you have your Core Focus keep it handy so you can take the shine off the tempting stuff. Use your Core Focus as a filter to evaluate the opportunities that show up and make you say “Ohhhh… We should do that too!” Look at the shiny stuff through the lens of your Core Focus and you’ll usually see that the shine can easily be made dull and unattractive, leaving you to continue on your path to becoming a great company.
